Hello and welcome to my online art gallery!
My name is Callandra Smith and I am a self-taught mosaic artist.
My relationship with mosaic art began when my uncle passed away in 2007. During the week of the funeral, my cousin introduced me to the art form as a way to keep me occupied while staying with her.
My cousin, an artist in her own right, handed me the materials and left me to use my own imagination to create. I remember going outside, sitting on the balcony, and listening to the cars hum by in the beautiful Spring weather. I began to create. No rules, no restrictions, no knowledge of the process -just taking what I had and creating. It was during this time when God began telling me to share my artwork.
After my time with my relatives, I began showing my work to others. Initially, I created pictures frames, coasters, and vases. Collectors of my art began purchasing and telling others about my items.
In 2012, I was asked to have my artwork become a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas, Texas resulting in me becoming the first Black woman to have her art a part of the museum’s permanent collection.
It has been so affirming and uplifting throughout my art career to hear people recount how they purchased my artwork as a gift and the recipient began crying because of the emotion my artwork evokes. To also be told that that my artwork is calming and serene is a testament to the fact that my gift truly is from God and takes me back to the conversation we had on that monumental day. My mission is to continue to share the artistic gift/talent God has given me in an effort to bring a little calm and serenity into the space of collectors of my art.
